How I WorkInitial MeetingOur relationship begins with an initial meeting, either over the phone or face to face. During that discussion, I gather information about your company, the financial challenges you are currently facing, and what you would like to accomplish in the future. From this, I can determine whether we should take specific action right away, or whether we need to do some more investigation first. This is because organizations are complex entities that involve numerous systems, processes, and people. During our first meeting, we may uncover some clues to what's holding back your profitability, but usually we need to work together for some time before we get to the heart of the matter. Once we have clearly identified the problem, I can then recommend appropriate, effective action. Role DefinitionMy role functions much like that of an in-house CFO or controller. I work at a senior level, providing the necessary leadership, guidance, and concrete deliverables to improve your company's financial future. Because profitability is tied to other aspects of business, such as marketing, technology, or human resources, I often recommend improvements or additional consultation in these areas, as well. I mentor existing staff or help you find new staff to carry out day-to-day data entry, bookkeeping, and accounting tasks. Like any supervisor, I can step in during a crisis and ensure that these tasks are performed; however, it is more effective for routine tasks to be delegated to a member of your office staff. Location and CommunicationI have a home office in Madison, Wisconsin, but much of my face-to-face work takes place at your office or at a third-party location. I can be reached almost any time via telephone or email, and stay in contact via remote access if I need to be out of town. Work and Meeting ScheduleBecause I know how busy my clients are, I offer as much flexibility as possible when it comes to schedules. I manage my schedule around your company's needs and rhythm. We meet when it is convenient for you, whether that be early morning, afternoon, or evening. I make plans to come onsite when it makes sense to do so. Weekly or monthly set schedules are also an option if that is preferable and practical for you. Charges and BillingIf requested, I can provide a project estimate; however, the scope of the project is often unknown at first. For that reason, I generally don't charge for the initial period of time while we are getting to know one another and defining what needs to be done. If we develop a long-term relationship after our initial project is completed, I usually suggest establishing a part-time salary that I bill monthly. This salary is negotiated at the time it is created, and can be revisited and changed as needed. |
